Whistling Through a Blade of Grass

Lila Schull + Muriel Condon

November 4th - December 31st, 2023

Whistling Through a Blade of Grass - is a 2-person exhibition that engages scraps of memory through intimate ceramic objects, paper pulp paintings, fabric constructions, and various printmaking techniques. They believe that there is comfort in tactility, and striking color can be joyful moments in the unknown.

As sensations, nostalgia and memory are potent but unreliable. As collaborators, Condon and Shull share a vulnerability of carrying their past close - as it slips through their fingers. Using various craft media - they capture the static and stillness of action- a point in time suspended. The pseudo-functionality, positioned by working parallel to these crafts’ history, is a response to the misinterpretations found in porous recollection. Playing off human’s ability to transform material and memory, Condon and Shull collect, examine, and then recontextualize singular moments. Within their series of choreographed place settings of collaborative works and individual art pieces, they reject objective binaries. Flexible dualisms are at play in this exhibition - private and public, rigid and soft, abstraction and representation.
