United Colors is excited to present a solo exhibition of diaristic photographs by Chantel Guzman-Cupil.
“In 2016, I went to Mexico to meet my family for the first time. Before that trip life had just been my mom, dad, brother and me. I always thought the rest of my family would only exist to me through the stories my mom would tell us. I loved hearing about her life growing up in Mexico City and I would often pretend to forget those stories just to get her to tell them again.
When I finally met everyone I was overwhelmed by how big our family was and how much love they had for my brother and I despite having never met us. After that trip I realized that the Latino community in Kansas felt so much smaller and secretive than I had remembered. The isolation felt inescapable against the rural Midwest. Over the last 9 years I’ve been documenting my family as a way to remember and hold onto them when I’m back in Kansas”.
Cuando Me Siento Sola, Recuérdame de Cuanto Me Quieres is an exhibition about the importance of family for Latinos. A trait shared in both in the United States and the rest of Latin America.
