SK REED:
Symbols explores how the past impacts the present. Common images such as a knight and noble woman interact with droplets, butterflies, and flames. Singular symbols, drawn on the surfaces of clay, emerge across the exhibition wall as if bubbling to the surface. Their separation suggests a difference in time, yet they all contribute to the story unfolding on the wall.
The artist, SK Reed uses popular images from museum collections to create the characters in their work. Reed is interested in what these images may have once stood for and what they can reveal of the problematic roots of America and the larger western world.
Familiarity is important to Reed, the more they get to know these images the more they might recognize what myths these images hold and how these myths contribute to the present moment. SK Reed questions the influence and realities of these often overlooked symbols in order to see clearly what some attempt to keep hidden.
